Manchester United loses 1-0 to Bayern Munich and is eliminated from the Champions League

Cheers rang out at Old Trafford on Tuesday after Manchester United lost 1-0 at home to Bayern Munich, knocking them out of the Champions League. Kingsley Coman scored in the 70th minute to end the three-time European Cup winners' slim chances of making it to the finals. United suffered their 12th defeat of the season in all competitions, finishing bottom of Group A and failing to even secure a place in the Europa League. Copenhagen defeated Galatasaray 1-0 and advanced to the round of 16 behind group winners Bayern. This result meant that even if they won, United would not have progressed to the next round. And for coach Erik ten Hag, his embarrassingly early departure is the latest setback in a difficult season. Harry Maguire's injury has added to concerns ahead of Sunday's Premier League game against leaders Liverpool.

At the final whistle on another disappointing night for United, fans showed their emotions as Bayern fans taunted their rivals. They had only won once in the group stages before the final game, so there was always a chance against United. Ten Hag's side had to end Bayern's 39-game unbeaten run in the competition in the group stage and were still hoping for a draw between Copenhagen and Galatasaray to secure second place. Bayern had already clinched top of their group and a place in the knockout stages for the 16th time in a row, but they showed no signs of taking the game lightly and looked confident for most of the match. United's prospects were of no use as Maguire was substituted just before half-time with an apparent groin injury. Jonny Evans replaced England. Another defender, Luke Shaw, was replaced by Aaron Wan-Bissaka at the break.

Bayern created good chances in the first half, with Leroy Sane becoming the biggest threat for the visiting team. However, he attempted a side foot volley from close range, but misplaced his technique and missed the target. United's best chance came from Shaw's long-range shot, which was deflected wide by Manuel Neuer. In a game where there were few chances, Bayern broke the deadlock with a really high-quality goal. Coman tormented United's defense as the home side struggled to play outside their defence. As the ball spilled, substitute Thomas Müller played the ball to Kane, who played a terse pass into Coman's path. With only Andre Onana to win, the striker fired a shot into the bottom corner. Ten Hag made a number of changes to secure an unlikely equalizer as Bayern cruised to a comfortable victory. Here you can see who has qualified for the Champions League round of 16 so far and who will be eliminated from the Europa League knock-off play-offs.
